A bookworm turned

Pauline Brinkworth (Hindmarsh)

In 1954, while attending Hindmarsh Primary School in Grade 7, I (then Pauline Wakefield) and a classmate Eugene Seneta (a Ukrainian refugee!) were each awarded a Mitton Prize by the Hindmarsh Council because we were good at English and were keen readers. The prize was a year’s free membership to the Hindmarsh (Institute) Library but of course we had to appear before the Librarian to accept the award. As I found the Librarian somewhat unwelcoming and the books available in the library of little interest, I never returned to the Library. However, I’ve been an avid reader most of my life as a teacher, school principal, lecturer and now retiree! And Eugene became Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney.
