This story about the Mount Gambier Institute is an example of how after many South Australian Institutes were established, they erected an Institute building that over time grew to meet the cultural and social needs of their town.

Institutes in the suburbs: Magill, Adelaide Hills Herald, 2 September 2022, p.16.

Magill Institute began early and strong, erecting a building in 1858. Thirteen years later it was defunct but was revived in 1901, erecting a second building in 1928. Both buildings are well used in 2023.

Institutes in the Hills: Crafers, Adelaide Hills Herald, 19 August 2022, p.12.

The Crafers Institute that was built in 1883 is now in a prominent position above the freeway. It began in 1862 as a Mechanics’ Institute.

Burra was one of the earliest country centres in South Australia. Its Institute building was one of the first and continues today as the     cultural centre for the town. The article tells of its long history.

This article tells of Port Adelaide Institute’s long and varied history. At its peak it had 1,150 members and a palatial building.

In 2018 Joelie had only begun her ambitious project to make a record of all of SA’s Institutes. This article includes the questions she was struggling with at the time, the sources she was using, and reveals (when compared with those listed in the 2021 website Institute histories) how much she had yet to discover.
