The Bugle Hut Lives Again

In 2023 the Bugle Hut Institute building was a stone shell abandoned in the middle of empty fields in the Mallee.

The isolated farmer-settlers built the hall in 1917 as a meeting place. For forty years it welcomed newcomers to the district, held celebrations and concerts and also served as an Institute and a school. As roads and transport improved, the scattered farm families abandoned the hall for activities and services in nearby towns such as Berri, Loxton and Renmark. The school closed in 1955 and the Institute was dissolved in 1967. The property was transferred to the Loxton District Council.

The hall weathered its abandonment with dignity.

Two years ago Kiara and Jamie Fisher bought the hall. While Jamie’s great, great grandfather had cleared the original allotment, Jamie had never seen the hall in use. With the help of friends and family the hall has been given new life. Walls have been repaired, the floor, roof and windows replaced, the grounds planted, and lights surround the outdoor space.

After the complete make-over and with the help of the internet, this unique place is now hosting community events. A capacity crowd of 80 celebrated Christmas there last year on December 22 and Harmonize at the Bugle Hut in the Open Air Courtyard is a 2025 Fringe event.

Congratulations Jamie and Kiara!
