A Community Learner

Ann Hughes (Geranium)

When I came to Geranium in late January 1956 to teach, never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the impact upon me through community involvement. This would not only be a huge learning experience but the benefit to my personal growth became significant.

On my arrival, I was very conscious that the girls my own age were accomplished in sewing, cooking, farming activities, could drive vehicles – as well as engage actively in sport and other community activities. They all seemed much more talented and skilled than I. Their friendship was heartening, inclusive and fun.Many were the mothers of the children I taught. Another learning curve to come!

My skills other than teaching were centred around sport, music and some dance forms learned earlier. I had never attended a meeting, delved into catering, nor could I sew or organise an event. I had a lot to learn about community life, being involved, and learning new skills.

I have never forgotten my late father’s advice when I received my appointment – “Always do your best in your profession, your community and the decisions you make. Never complain about what you don’t have.” – This has guided me to great experiences. The many opportunities, challenges and risks have required much determination and even a sacrifice or two.

The Geranium Institute became my lifeline for learning over a long period. Therewere sports meetings, table tennis and later a four-year TAFE course in dressmaking – that I passed in between motherhood. Joining the CWA, an activeFloral Art group, and helping at events all added interest and new skills for me.

I developed a keen interest in meeting procedure which I learnt through observingothers in leadership positions. The first meeting I ever chaired was

nerve wracking. This was a great opportunity and I was a fast learner. I learnt early that effective participation came from the useful tool of inclusivity.

I have been involved in a range of organisations at the Geranium Institute for just on fifty years, and I am most grateful for the opportunities and learning experiences. I have become a useful community member through my zealous nature to learn.

I know I am a better person through my many experiences at Geranium. I have made errors in judgement, and experienced the highs and lows which often face those in leadership positions. I have learnt to work harmoniously with others, and been privately satisfied with many good results.

It has been a wonderful journey. The Geranium Institute, through its strength in community involvement, opened many opportunities for me as a person. Today I continue to utilise the skills learnt. I am still involved in several community groups and able to make a worthwhile contribution.
